Started in 1900 when Richard Wilkinson of Mitchellville, Iowa switched from raising Shorthorn cattle to registered black Angus because of their superior carcass quality. He started with the best Angus cattle he could find in North America. In fact his first herd sire Frank T Wells was the sire of the first champion carload of steers at the first International in Chicago. In 1909 Richard made a large importation of the best Angus he could find in England. We have strived every since to use the best bulls we can find in the USA and Canada.

We don't chase after what is so called hot, but after proven quality sires that meet our strict criteria. Our cattle have to be structurally sound and correct from head to toe, good disposition, large side of the middle of the road, and be easy fleshing. We liked the big Earl Marshall cattle of the teens and 20's. We had a lot of big Eileenmere's in the 30's and 40's. We hated the little belt buckle cattle of the 50's and 60's and tried not to swing that way. We hated the hard doing Holstein type Angus of the 80's and tried to maintain our fleshability. We are presently leery of the small genetic base of sires available and the poor structure and feet that is getting into the breed. But by setting our sites and not wavering with fads and trends of different times we have maintained a more consistent and uniform herd of a far superior Angus phenotype that is available anywhere today.
